SECONDARY MATHEMATICS TEACHER OF THE YEAR
It is a pleasure to announce Mrs. Rubright as Broward County’s Secondary Mathematics Teacher of the Year.  In her four years at Margate Middle she has proven herself as a valuable asset.   Mrs. Rubright’s major contributions to mathematics education are multifaceted. Through systematic and explicit instruction with the use of technology, she is able to tailor instruction to meet the individual needs of her students. Mrs. Rubright’s love for Mathematics infused with real world applications consistently affects her students making them feel that the content is worthwhile. Her Masters degree in Special Education has provided her with a valuable background on learning disabilities and accommodations that are beneficial for all students varying in learning abilities.

Mrs. Rubright’s class microblog through Edmodo provides a safe environment which encourages peer-tutoring and an avenue in which students can seek homework help thus increasing their conceptual understanding. She has successfully created a classroom community that fosters acceptance of peers helping students feel safe to ask questions while improving their self-confidence and eagerness to learn.

One hundred percent of Mrs. Rubright’s GEM7 students passed the Algebra I End of Course exam in the top third of the State of Florida.  We attribute her students’ success to FCAT pullouts during planning, Saturday school tutoring, interactive lessons, hands on projects, use of manipulatives and instant feedback. Active Expressions (handheld remotes which wirelessly submit answers to the promethean board) are used during everyday instruction providing an instant poll of each student’s strategic competence and procedural fluency.

It is a privilege to have Mrs. Rubright as Margate Middle’s Mathematics Academic Games Coach for the past four years, to coordinate team practices and oversee our students at the AMC8, BCCTM, and Math Counts competitions. Mrs. Rubright is also our Girls Track and Field Coach.  Her dedication to Margate Middle School and mathematics education has not gone unnoticed.  As co-coordinator of the Saint Jude Math-a-thon, she has encouraged her students to raise much needed funds for children who are battling cancer.  Her students raised over a thousand dollars each year for the past two years and were featured in the Sun-Sentinel and several local forums.

MATH-A-THON
Margate Middle School Students Raise Funds to Help Children Battling Cancer.  Students at Margate Middle School participated in the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s Math-A-Thon program. The students raised $1,900 to help children who are battling cancer and other deadly diseases. The 7th grade Hurricanes team at the school raised $1,041 of the total.

“We are so proud of our students for embracing Math- A-Thon and raising critical funds for St. Jude,” said Lesley Shell and Ruthann Rubright, coordinators of the event. “Every dollar raised will help support the St. Jude mission of finding cures and saving children in communities worldwide.”

Math-A-Thon allows students to build and practice essential math skills while they raise funds for kids battling cancer at St. Jude. Teachers serve asvolunteer coordinators and participating students solve math problems printed in an online “funbook.” Students ask family and friends for donationsin support of their participation. All donations are sent to St. Jude. No child is ever turned away at St. Jude’s because of the family’s inability to pay,so donations are vital.  For more information on how to host your own Math-A-Thon event, call 1-800-FUNBOOK

CLEAN-UP PROJECT
Saturday morning, January 15, 2011, NJHS and DFYIT club members woke up early to help clean up Margate Middle. They worked together in small groups pulling weeds, picking up garbage, shoveling dirt and rocks out of the bike rack, scrubbing all the poles along the parent pick up side, and trimming the palm trees along the front of the school. Even though the students worked incredibly hard all morning, you could hear them enjoying themselves as they laughed and sang while they worked.
