January 2011 has come and gone and we are hard at work as we enter the testing season. At this time, we are now all engaged in making sure that all of our students are prepared for the FCAT. We’ve disaggregated the data from BAT 2 and students have been placed in tutorials based on their area of weakness. Now is the time for you to ensure that your child is preparing for the FCAT as well as making sure they come to school and complete their homework assignments. One thing we highly suggest is that he or she reads for thirty to forty minutes every day. Please encourage your child to put forth the effort to succeed in all of their academic work.
This year we are emphasizing the use of FCAT Explorer. If your child has access to a computer, they can log on and practice for the FCAT. We are currently running an incentive program to encourage them to practice for the FCAT using FCAT Explorer. Starting February 19th, we will have Saturday FCAT preparation camps for all of our students to attend. Parents, please take advantage of this great opportunity to prepare our students to have a successful testing year. We are providing another form in the newsletter to be turned in to your child’s Language Arts teacher.
In January, we had our open house for our incoming 6th graders. This year in addition to the SELECT and SELECT+ programs we currently have, we are now a “GROWING STEM” Magnet middle school. This is a two to three year process within which our entire staff will be trained in the STEM philosophy of learning. This is another enhancement to the wonderful education we provide here at Margate Middle School.
